Refurbishment and heritage buildings

Acies is experienced in and known for complex cut and carve reuse and refurbishment projects, often on challenging sites.

We have worked on projects in restricted city centre locations, beside main thoroughfares and railway lines, above underground lines, in conservation areas and with buildings requiring sensitive refurbishment, including retaining façades and architecturally important features. Our expertise enables us to add value to building reuse projects, maximising existing floorspace, adding storeys and extending to optimise asset value. Our designs save both time and costs. Increasingly, clients are recognising the sustainable value of building reuse. We can assist with embodied carbon reporting for your project.

Our work

From our Edinburgh location, we have worked on numerous listed and heritage buildings in the city centre, as well as on prestigious buildings in London and other UK cities. We are experienced in identifying cost and safety risks associated with buildings at an early stage. Throughout, we will advise clients on potential requirements for structural strengthening of superstructures and foundations and how these can be considered in their cost plan. We work collaboratively with our colleagues in the RSK Group to develop scopes for non-intrusive, minimally intrusive and intrusive investigations to determine structural details.

We conduct back analysis of structures to determine the extent of work needed. Following our analysis, we aim to decrease the amount of on-site work to reduce construction costs. Through our knowledge of the construction process, all our remodelling designs consider buildability parameters so that temporary work can be minimised and permanent work is simple to carry out in the building. We are experienced in working on occupied sites, including hospitals, schools and care homes, and consider phasing of work and construction sequencing to minimise disruption.
